Alaska Fun Facts

September 20, 2013

Alaska is dubbed “The Last Frontier” for a reason. It is so diverse, wild, breathtaking and where we call home half of the year. This enormous state has some pretty interesting trivia and history.

Check out these ten facts about Alaska:

I mentioned above that Alaska is enormous! You know it’s the largest state in our union, but did you know that if you placed it over the continental US it stretches to both coasts and is twice the size of Texas?

More than 1/2 of the globe’s glaciers are in Alaska.

Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 for less than two cents per acre, which is $7,200,000. It was officially named the 49th state on January 3rd, 1959.

Alaska’s state sport is dog mushing. And this used to be the primary mode of transportation.

Nearly 1/3 of Alaska is in the Arctic Circle.

17 of the 20 highest peaks in the United States exist in Alaska.

If New York City had the same population density as Alaska only 16 people would live there.

In Anchorage there are more espresso stands per capita than anywhere in the United States.

There are nearly 100 different languages spoken within the Anchorage school district.

Alaska is the United States’ most northern, most western (yeehaw!) and most eastern state–at the same time.

See, you learn something every day.
